Kathmandu / Kathmandu University is set to host the 25th International MELOW (The Society for the Study of the Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the World) Conference in Dhulikhel from 27 to 29 September 2024. The event, organized by the international literary organization MELOW, will bring together approximately 200 delegates, including 120 international scholars and 80 national participants. MELOW, established in 1997, promotes literary connections and scholarly collaboration across borders, time, and space.

Prof. Manju Jaidka, a distinguished academic and President of MELOW, has arrived in Nepal with a team of scholars from India for the conference, which will explore the relationship between literature and landscapes. Themes such as environment, indigeneity, spirituality, forests, fantasies, and landscapes’ role in shaping human identity will be highlighted through the 120 papers to be presented.

Keynote speakers include Prof. Krishnan Unni from Delhi University, India, and former Vice-Chancellor of Far-Western University, Nepal, Prof. Amma Raj Joshi. Panel discussions will feature prominent scholars such as Prof. Krishna Chandra Sharma, Prof. Anand Sharma, Prof. Ram Chandra Poudel, and Prof. Jib Lal Sapkota.

Kathmandu University views this conference as a pivotal moment for intellectual growth and ecological understanding, focusing on the intersection of literature, culture, and nature. As the world grapples with ecological issues and increasing technological encroachment, the conference aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the portrayal of nature in literature and its relevance to contemporary life.

The conference will address diverse sub-themes, including plains and possibilities, deserts and desolation, and mountains, mystery, and menace, further enriching discussions on the relationship between literature and the natural world.
